Atlas is Boston Dynamics’ fully electric humanoid robot, unveiled in 2024 as the next chapter after its legendary hydraulic predecessor. Compact and robustly built, it marks a significant evolution in humanoid robotics — engineered not for demonstration purposes, but for genuine industrial deployment alongside human workers.
At the heart of Atlas’s capability are its continuous-rotation joints, which grant a range of motion that exceeds human anatomical limits, allowing it to move through poses and transitions no person could attempt. This mechanical flexibility is paired with advanced whole-body control, enabling Atlas to coordinate every limb simultaneously when handling complex manipulation tasks — delivering both stability and efficiency in demanding environments.
Atlas is currently being deployed in partnership with Hyundai for automotive manufacturing, placing it on real factory floors rather than in controlled lab conditions. Its perception systems allow it to read its surroundings and adapt in real time, making it a responsive and reliable presence on the line.
